Bar Committee to Help Military and Veterans
PHOENIX – December 4, 2009 – Finding new ways to help Arizona military and veterans solve their legal issues is the focus of a new committee at the State Bar of Arizona. The group held its first meeting Friday December 4th.

According to Military Legal Assistance Committee Chairman retired army Brigadier General Gregg Maxon, there are an estimated 600,000 veterans in Arizona. He told the committee that on any given day there are approximately 20,000 active duty service members stationed in our state. Another 24,000 service members with Arizona roots are deployed overseas.
The problem, according to Brig. Gen. Maxon, is that there is no program specifically geared to assist these deserving individuals with their legal issues. Some of those issues are related to their military service, but many are simply the nagging legal problems which many families face but can be complicated by military duty.
The committee will look into how to assist veterans and military personnel with legal issues ranging from family law to homelessness to legislation. There were also discussions about how to help veterans who need legal assistance in attempting to start a business. It is made up of 25 members who have both background and a special interest in veterans and military issues.
